The Benefits of Wisdom: Privileged Companions

How happy your people must be! What a privilege for your officials to stand here day after day, listening to your wisdom! – 1 Kings 10:8 (New Living Translation)

Another benefit of wisdom is crystallized in this passage: wisdom makes for happy and fortunate fellows or privileged companions. The relatives, friends, colleagues, associates, mates and acquaintances of a wise man are blessed – at least those that interact constantly with him – because her wisdom rubs off on them, making them wise also. That is why the Bible says “He who walks with the wise will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).

Apart from the magnetic aura of Solomon, the Queen of Sheba must have been equally overwhelmed by the dignified comportment of his people that she could not help gushing in excitement, eulogizing Solomon and congratulating members of his court. While it is pleasant to be related to or acquainted with a really wise fellow, it is a great privilege to have direct access to her. As we know, wisdom does not broadcast itself; but it cannot go unnoticed either in the general bearing of someone possessed of it.

Solomon was the center of attraction in the context of this passage, but his chiefs and servants could not help but be noticed because they too must be exuding wisdom in their words and conduct. Having been with Solomon for a length of time, it was only natural that they too would think, talk, act, and reason like him.

And that is one of the benefits of wisdom; it rubs off on your companions and avails them some of the privileges of wisdom. That was why Solomon’s courtiers were described as privileged and blessed to have been exposed to his intelligence firsthand and at regular intervals, too.

It is pleasant to be acquainted with a really wise person, but it is a great privilege to have direct access to them.

You will succeed in Jesus’ Name!
