The Benefits of Wisdom: Craftsmanship

I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. – Exodus 31:3 (New Living Translation)

We are starting another series where we will dwell extensively on the multifold benefits of wisdom in special occasions or circumstances, as well as in everyday life. The first advantage of wisdom we shall meditate on today is craftmanship or technical expertise.

Our reference scripture introduced us to Bezalel, a man whom God filled with His Spirit with a physical expression in wisdom for designing, modeling, constructing and crafting all manners of complex materials needed for the works of God.

If you read the various designs that God communicated to Moses during the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan, you will realize how awe-inspiring the depth of skills that Bezalel, Aholiab his assistant, as the men and women in their unit must have possessed to come up with the models of the various concepts God communicated to Moses, most of which were unheard of before, and then followed that with the actual construction of each of them in material form.

Reading through some of the instructions of God to Moses with specific details as to what needed to be done, the heights, the widths, the textures, the materials to be used, and other head-spinning instructions, one can be forgiven for skimming through the pages of that portion of the Bible without dwelling much on them. Imagine then what it must have been like for the men who were entrusted with the responsibility of translating all these vague and complex ideas into a concrete form several thousands of years ago without the benefit of modern technology. It was a very tough ask indeed.

But Bezalel was able to accomplish all these simply because God endowed him with His Spirit, and the Spirit in turn specifically imparted Bezalel with wisdom for the technical expertise needed to capture those vague concepts into prototypes and the actual designs afterwards, even when they were seemingly disadvantaged by the harsh environments they operated in and the lack of modern tools or technology. Therefore, one of the advantages that you can derive from wisdom is the gift of technical expertise.

No doubt, there are millions of skills in the world. However, for every skill out there, there are few individuals who are renowned as the best or the leading figures in their respective fields. These are the men and women who have their expertise mixed with wisdom. When that happens, the result is usually phenomenal, with global prestige in its wake, as those so endowed cannot remain in obscurity.

Therefore, one of the advantages of wisdom is to afford one a natural talent for specific crafts. It can also add an edge to existing skills that would make the possessor exceptional.
