The Benefits of Wisdom: Insulation from Flattery
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, that they may keep you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words. – Proverbs 7:4-6
Another benefit of wisdom, as we can see in our reference passage today, is its ability to shield the one who has it from the corruption of flattery. Wisdom is an effective insulator.
As subtle as flattery may be, it is a deadly weapon that is able to kill, destroy or derail. Many a great (wo)man has crashed from grace to grass due to the subtlety of flattery. Across the ages, vast kingdoms, great enterprises and other mega structures have been reduced to nothing because their leaders or key decision makers succumbed to the wiles of flattery, which led them to act out of place with devastating effects on the entities they presided over.
Anyone who is of note in life is usually a target of flattery, so it is somewhat inevitable. But with the shield of wisdom, its impact can be rendered nonconsequential. Therefore, in order not to fall prey to the danger of flattery, either at a personal or corporate level, the Bible tells us that we need wisdom as a weapon to resist or neuter its effects.
This makes wisdom an important asset for everyone in leadership to have in order to be protected from the calamity of flattery.
You will succeed in Jesus’ Name!
