Our Daily Dew meditation for the beginning of this on the disposition to take when confronted by the truth, no matter how long you have lived or operated in error.
Now…Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord given by Moses…Thus it happened, when the king heard the words of the Law, that he tore his clothes. – 2 Chronicles 34:14, 19
The passage above presents us with a scenario; the people of Israel and Judah had lived for so long without a knowledge of the commands of God. They had done things and interrelated the way they thought best for years without recourse to the tenets of God. To them, ignorance was indeed bliss.
Then, out of the blue, a priest stumbled on the Book of the Law, which they read and then realised that they had been living in error for so long and had severally offended God beyond endurance. They saw all the divine injunctions they were meant to live by in black and white as well as the specified retribution for violating them.
Meanwhile, once the contents of the Book of the Law were made known to King Josiah, he became broken and agitated, considering the number of years they had lived in impunity. He immediately sent emissaries to hear from God and make entreaties to Him, so that he and his people would not be consumed by wrath. When God saw his earnestness, He decided to suspend the judgement that was about to fall until later when he (Josiah) would have died.
The attitude of Josiah is our learning point today. His response, when he encountered the truth, was spontaneous, instantaneous, earnest and sincere. There is no doubting his sincerity. He wanted to make amends immediately; he wanted to appease God and prevent a divine judgment from pouring upon his people.
The question is how do you respond or react when you are confronted with the truth about any aspect of your life? Do you get defensive or earnest enough to change your ways like King Josiah? Are you the type who owns up or the type that rationalises, excuses, jokes or explains their inabilities away?
We all can learn some lessons from Josiah.
You will succeed in Jesus’ Name!
