The Ordinance of Firstborn: Are Firstborns Cursed?
“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
Unstable as water, you shall not excel…” – Genesis 49:3-4
There is a belief that firstborns, particularly male firstborns, are cursed or have some spiritual yokes gagging them. This is because they usually encounter all kinds of calamities in life, ranging from failures, delays, frustrations, and other forms of challenges in their careers, businesses, marriages, and other affairs. They generally do not seem to do so well compared to their younger siblings.
Maybe you can look at some of the male firstborns you know and try to analyze them in relation to their younger siblings to see how they are faring. Your analysis should not just be based on financial or material criteria alone. While finance is part of the burdens the male firstborns usually tend to contend with, other factors of achievement should be considered as well, including delays in marriage, childbearing, getting jobs, and business success, among other things.
You can also consider such conditions as their relative achievements or struggles in academic, financial, business, workplace, and other aspects of endeavors. Looking at these, what are the success rates of the firstborn males you know? What are their failure rates? How do they fare in relation to their mates and contemporaries who are not firstborn? And how do they fare in relation to their own younger siblings?
For the next few days, we shall meditate on the ordinance of firstborn in the Bible and attempt to proffer a biblical answer to the agelong question, ‘are firstborns cursed?’ with the hope of finding a lasting solution to the firstborn syndrome or the firstborn conundrum.
This promises to be an enlightening series for all parents. It will also liberate many from the shackles of ignorance that have been repressing them as the firstborns of their respective families and as parents who also have firstborns of their own.
