The Myth of Omnipresence (7): God at the Tower of Babel

And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.. And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” – Genesis 11:2-7

Another biblical passage that invalidates the theory of God’s omnipresence and proves it a myth can be seen in our reference today, which captures the Tower of Babel episode.

In this passage alone, there are two separate instances where the Bible says God came down. Firstly, the Bible says He came down to see what humans were up to with the mighty tower they were building. This first coming could be one of His routine checks that He performs regularly on earth (see details here). It could also be because one of His angels stationed in that part of the earth alerted Him as to what was going on, thus warranting Him coming down Himself to come and see the edifice. Whatever it was, He was not present when the project started and only came down to see when it was already underway.

The second reference to God coming down in this passage suggests that after His initial check, God had to go back to heaven to mobilize His hosts so that they could together fix the problem being created on earth by the Babel builders. Hear Him:

And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” – Genesis 11:6-7

This passage suggests the idea of a very mobile God who shuttles across different parts of His universe. Note that, in terms of percentage, our Earth, as huge as it may appear to us, is very infinitesimally small in its own galaxy. As we established in another post, the Earth is even less than 0.05% in its own mother galaxy, called the Milky Way, and there are billions (if not trillions) of galaxies out there.

So, saying God is materially present in all of them at the same time is overstating the case. He is not. And we can see in our reference passage today that God Himself only travels around the Earth; He is not physically stationed in every part of the Earth. Therefore, He is not omnipresent. Although He can be anywhere He chooses to be at any given time.
