The Importance of the Altar: Strengthening Your Spiritual Influence Through Devotion

An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record My name, I will come to you, and I will bless you. – Exodus 20:24

The altar is not just a place of worship; it is also a place of power. A devotee is as powerful as the power of their altar and the being worshipped there. Note that we deliberately used the term ‘devotee’ because the altar is not the sole preserve of the Abrahamic religions, including Judaism and Christianity, alone. It is a universal spiritual phenomenon for those who devote themselves to worshipping a higher being, as the altar represents a sacred space for devotees.

However, because this devotional stems from a Christian faith, we will delve more specifically into the topic of the altar from a Christian perspective. The good news for Christians is that they do not need a particular place to be designated as an altar for worshipping God, unlike other religions. This is because, with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; the old system of accessing God at a designated place has been replaced with a more ubiquitous means through the Holy Spirit Who dwells in the heart of every true believer who has confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

On the other hand, the fact that a Christian does not need a designated place for an altar does not mean that a Christian must not observe the practices required for maintaining a life of devotion, which is like maintaining a symbolic altar. Such rites as studying the Bible, prayer, interceding for others, fellowship with other brethren, evangelizing to unbelievers, giving of alms, offerings, tithes, firstfruits, and other such acts of devotion commanded by Christ are ways a 21st-century Christian can keep their altar alive and active.

For the avoidance of doubt, the most important of these is a consistent life of prayers, studying the word of God and endeavoring to live holy without sin. To the extent that a Christian gets this mix right and observes them religiously, is the extent to which their altar will be effective.

The effectiveness of an altar speaks to the privilege a believer enjoys in receiving answers to their prayers that align with God’s will. Any Christian with a powerful altar usually has their prayers answered by God, while those whose altars are weak are not typically candidates for spiritual influence, and they are the ones who often need to consult with pastors, prophets, and other clergy to pray for them or on their behalf.

The reason the clergy can pray for others and have their prayers answered soon enough is that, by virtue of their calling, they must live devoted lives that help them maintain their own altar. Nevertheless, not every clergy has influence with God. The difference is their altar.

There are also many other people who are neither ordained as clergy nor called to be one. Yet, they wield significant influence in the spirit realm because they maintain a lifestyle that helps their altar to wax strong.

Spiritually, you are as strong and influential, or weak and watered down, in direct proportion to your personal altar. There is no doubt about that.
