The Benefits of Wisdom: The Ultimate Acquisition

Happy is the man who finds wisdom… She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. – Proverbs 3:13-15

In continuation of our meditation on the benefits of wisdom, the Bible submits that wisdom is ‘more precious than rubies’. But it does not end there. It also says that all, not some or even most, but all the things one may desire are no match for wisdom! Now isn’t that grand? That means wisdom is the height of all desires and the ultimate acquisition anyone can have.

Now, let’s get a little granular with this position. In the first part of this passage, the Bible posits that wisdom is more precious than rubies. Rubies are in the family of gemstones, like diamonds and gold. The unique thing about gemstones is that they rarely depreciate in value. On the contrary, even when there is market volatility or economic upheavals that rock the stock markets and make the value of currencies depreciate, gemstones rarely drop in value. That is the reason the smart investors usually invest in them to preserve their wealth once the market starts to totter.

We have already considered how wisdom is more valuable than silver and gold. Today, however, it appears God does not want us to get it twisted by thinking that the value of wisdom is higher in relation to the common gemstones alone; all other gemstones are encompassed, including rubies. Therefore, wisdom is far superior to rubies, just as it is superior to diamond, gold and silver.

Further, the second part of that passage opines that none of the good things of life that we desire can be compared to wisdom. Thus, making it the ultimate acquisition anyone can have. Think about it, what do you really desire in life? Money, power, fame, fulfilment, et cetera, the Bible says wisdom ranks far higher than any of these in worth and importance. Not to mention that it is also a veritable key to acquiring all of them. The more reason we must consciously seek wisdom and retain it.
