The Benefits of Wisdom: Pricelessness
“But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living. The deep says, ‘It is not in me’; And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ It cannot be purchased for gold, Nor can silver be weighed for its price. It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx or sapphire. Neither gold nor crystal can equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral or quartz, For the price of wisdom is above rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold.” – Job 28:12-19
Another benefit that wisdom can confer on its possessor is pricelessness. Wisdom does not just make great and grand; it can also make timeless and priceless.
Look around and consider some of the great innovations, works of art, and classics around today, they are all products of wisdom. They were inspired by wisdom, crafted with intricate depths and skills that only wisdom can endow. Wisdom makes classics by elevating the thinking and crafts that go into the development of timeless pieces. That is why they become priceless.
Our reference passage today sheds some light on this. Let us consider it in another nuanced translation:
“But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding? No one knows where to find it, for it is not found among the living. ‘It is not here,’ says the ocean. ‘Nor is it here,’ says the sea. It cannot be bought with gold. It cannot be purchased with silver. It’s worth more than all the gold of Ophir, greater than precious onyx or lapis lazuli. Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal. It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold. Coral and Jasper are worthless in trying to get it. The price of wisdom is far above rubies. Precious peridot from Ethiopia cannot be exchanged for it. It’s worth more than the purest gold.” (Job 28:12-19, New Living Translation)
If wisdom is this much, then imagine the output of the person to whom wisdom confers this much. Priceless, isn’t it? The more reason you should go for it.
