The Benefits of Wisdom: Pleasantness and Peace

Happy is the man who finds wisdom… Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. – Proverbs 3:13-17

Our reference passage today shares another benefit of wisdom: It makes one’s way pleasant and leads one on the path of peace. In other words, wisdom avails you of pleasantness and peace or makes your personal comportment pleasant and helps you pursue a path of peace.

These twin benefits of wisdom are not just essential for one to live a good life, but also important in ensuring one lives a long life. Being pleasant means that wisdom serves as a guardrail to help its possessor discriminate in what he or she takes in. A pleasant person is not disposed to bitterness, ugliness, evil or wickedness. They usually want nothing to do with those and are careful not to mix with people who are bitter, critical, wicked, ugly in thoughts and wicked in their ways. Even if they are related to such people by blood, because of the sensitive nature that a pleasant person is naturally inclined to maintain, they find a way to avoid close contact with such relatives. Why? Because they do not want to be affected by their negativity.

Being pleasant in nature makes one very sensitive, which means that they are extremely picky about the experiences they expose themselves to or the people they have in their circles. Thus, a wise person is able to maintain good health by being insulated.

Further, following the paths of peace means that wisdom helps its possessor to prioritize the course of peace in all things. That means they make choices that will foster peace, decisions that will promote peace, actions that will aid peace, and maintain attitudes that will enhance peace for themselves and others.

It is often said that peace is the forerunner of prosperity. Prosperity in this regard is not limited to financial blessings alone; a bountiful and fulfilled life is prosperity. Moreover, with peace comes good health, and sound health helps to enhance the quality of life and prolong its length. We all can do with those. The more reason we need to seek wisdom.
