The Benefits of Wisdom: Obedience
Only may the Lord give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. – 1 Chronicles 22:12
Another benefit of wisdom is that it enables you to obey the law of God. Wisdom has been said to develop in anyone who has a healthy fear of God. Thus, the Bible saying, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).
This therefore shows a very strong connection between being wise and fearing God, by living right and dealing rightly. This connection is also emphasized in our reference passage, which posits that a possession of wisdom and understanding will help the wise person to keep the law of God.
Although, we have approached the topic of wisdom by combing through various books of the Bible in a chronological order, and we have also devoted a great deal of time exploring the benefits of wisdom through the life of Solomon, the above scripture offers us some context on the origin of the wisdom of Solomon. The passage captures one of the final exchanges between David and Solomon before the former’s death. It also states the fatherly advice David gave his son, who would be succeeding him to the throne of Israel.
Therefore, we can see that Solomon had a good background that facilitated his becoming a wise person and ruler. His father had told him he needed wisdom to keep the law of God. Keeping the law of God meant that he would be in the good book of God; while being in the good book of God ultimately meant that he would enjoy the blessings of God, which he in particular did enjoy to the fullest.
That Solomon later went on to become a great man, a renowned king and a very prosperous figure were testament to the fact that he must have taken his father’s advice on the importance of wisdom to heart. That was why when God appeared to him and asked him to make a request, all Solomon asked for was wisdom (2 Chronicles 1:10).
Because he was blessed with wisdom, Solomon was able to start off his reign on a very good footing and he went on to become great and prosperous in its wake, as wisdom helped him to obey God, and the more he obeyed, the more God blessed him.
This tells us that having wisdom may not be that far-fetched after all, as we can easily attract it by the way we are disposed to God and in the choices we make.
