The Benefits of Wisdom: Insulation from Perversion

When wisdom enters your heart… to deliver you from the… man who speaks perverse things, from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths. – Proverbs 2:10-15

Another benefit of wisdom, which we shall consider today, is its ability to insulate one from perversion, both in human form and situations. The Bible passage says wisdom in the heart delivers one from those who are perverse in speech, immoral in ways, delights in evil and perversity, as well as crooked and devious in paths. Sure, that is not an ideal company for any right-thinking person to keep.

Even though we meet all sorts of people in our everyday lives, wisdom acts as a shield to prevent us from becoming closer to the wrong company. It also serves as a metric system to help us determine who is fit for us to forge bonds with and who is best kept at arm’s length.

Therefore, wisdom becomes a barometer by which we measure the current and potential temperament, personality type, and character of the people we encounter. This is so that we know whether they are the right fit for us to become close to or form a relationship of any kind with, be that marital, business, friendship, etc. In other words, wisdom helps us to choose our association. It guides us in identifying our allies. It also helps us to know whom to stay away from as well as whose ways not to emulate, no matter how highly placed they may be.

Further, wisdom helps us to be more settled in our ways, come to terms with ourselves, and know how to behave in different life scenarios. We can gain this much from wisdom.
