The Benefits of Wisdom: Exceeding Expectations
Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard. – 1 Kings 10:6-7
The Wisdom of Solomon, apart from flooring a great stateswoman as Queen Sheba, also exceeded her wildest expectations. And that is one of the benefits that wisdom also confers on those that possess it. It enables them to overdeliver and excel beyond the average, thus hushing the biggest critics.
Being a renowned ruler in that era, one can safely say that Queen Sheba must have seen it all. And having been told about the estate of Solomon, her curiosity, fueled by skepticism, was what motivated her to go and see for herself so that she could at least prove the various accounts she had been regaled with about Solomon as mere exaggerations.
However, she got more than she bargained for when she visited. After sitting in Solomon’s court and conducted around his estate, she was dumbstruck, with no spirit left in her to take in more. By the time she found her voice and could finally talk, she only enthused, “What I heard in my own land about your acts and your wisdom was true! I did not believe it until I came and saw it with my own eyes! In fact, I was not even told half. Your wisdom and prosperity are greater than the stories I heard!” (1 Kings 10:6-7, Modern English Version).
Wisdom in application was the wow factor that set Solomon apart from anything else Queen Sheba might have seen in her entire life until that point. And there is no gainsaying that she probably never saw anything like that anymore.
Wisdom, when applied, helps its possessor to perform beyond requirements and exceed expectations.
