The Benefits of Wisdom: Discretion, A Companion of Wisdom

When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you. – Proverbs 2:10

The second companion of wisdom for our meditation today is discretion, which the dictionary defines as the ‘quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offence or revealing private information.’ You can also call this tact.

As a companion of wisdom, discretion also has multiple benefits. Discretion can earn you the trust and respect of people, as having a reputation for tactfulness means people can trust you with their confidence and can count on you to keep their confidential information. Knowing that you are also considerate or act in a tactful manner means people are more likely to confide in you and rely on your judgment.

Another benefit of discretion is that it helps you avoid conflict. Being tactful means being careful in your words and actions, a discipline that can prevent misunderstandings or offence to others in sensitive situations. Discretion can also help you advance in your career because it ensures that you are discreet with sensitive information, whether that is about a client, colleague, or company. This helps you maintain a good professional reputation and avoid legal or ethical violations.

Discretion also helps you to protect personal or professional relationships that could prove beneficial. Being discreet shows you care about others’ privacy and well-being. This also helps you to strengthen relationships by demonstrating that you are mindful of boundaries and respect others’ wishes.

Discretion helps you to make sound decisions, as it makes you take the time to think before acting or speaking, leading to better decisions. With it, you are also more likely to weigh situations carefully and respond in a measured way instead of impulsive reactions. Similar to this is a knack for crisis management, as discretion is crucial for managing crises effectively, particularly in situations that involve sensitive or controversial topics. It helps you to approach delicate matters with care and avoid worsening the problem.

Being discreet also means you are less likely to participate in or encourage gossip. This can help maintain a positive environment, whether in personal or professional relationships. Discretion can also help boost your leadership potential. Discreet people are often viewed as dependable, wise, and empathetic. This can improve their ability to lead with authority and earn respect from their teams.

Discretion is a key ally of wisdom and an ingredient component of emotional intelligence. It can help you navigate complex social landscapes with insight and sensitivity. These and many more desirable attributes make discretion essential.
