The Benefits of Wisdom: Discernment and Expression

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel. Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned. – Proverbs 5:1-2 (NLT)

This scripture tells us another twin benefit of wisdom: it avails discernment and informed lips to whoever possesses it. Now, discernment as a human quality has its benefits, as it is the ingredient needed to see beyond the surface or sort through layers of options to pinpoint the real thing, whatever that may be in a specific context.

Discernment is what you need to have a realistic, if not accurate, appraisal of the real issue in a situation, or the real person behind a persona. The Encarta Dictionary describes it as the ability ‘to see or notice something that is not very clear or obvious; to understand something that is not immediately obvious, and be able to tell the difference between two or more things.’

Discernment is the guard you need to avoid living in errors, with a trail of blunders in your tail. And discernment is only available to someone who has wisdom.

Secondly, wisdom gives you an informed mouth. The passage above says that it helps your lips to express what you have learned. In other words, it gives you the privilege of expression. It is not everyone who can boast of that, and not everyone who expresses him/herself does so in a wise manner.

Therefore, wisdom is the distinguishing factor between someone who has something to say and whose expression is cherished, as against those who just talk because they have to say something, and whose words hold no water. Wisdom makes the difference.
