Servant Leadership: How to Be A Leader Worth Dying For (1)
And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” – 1 Kings 12:7
You might have wondered what the secret of some leaders is who command genuine loyalty and passionate commitment from both their lieutenants and followers, as against the leaders who are only being tolerated by those around them, or those who only enjoy the loyalty of their followers because of coercion and fear. Our meditation for the next few days shall be on the principles of servant leadership and the factors that make some leaders so beloved that their people will be willing to die for them.
The passage for our meditation is an excerpt from the encounter that happened between Rehoboam, the king of Israel who succeeded his illustrious father, Solomon, to the throne of the land. After his official enthronement and the ceremonies of his coronation were over, the people of Israel, his subjects, came to him with a customary request, saying, “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you” (I Kings 12:4).
Being a youth and naïve about the affairs of state, Rehoboam did the right thing by consulting his father’s councilors, men who sat in council during the reign of his famed father whose wisdom was unparalleled. These elders therefore presented him a blueprint for servant leadership, saying, “Help these people today. Serve them. Answer them with good words. If you do, then they will be your servants forever” (New Life Version).
