For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. – 2 Corinthians 8:9
In continuation of our series on Purpose, we are further acquainted with another purpose of Jesus Christ in the passage above. The Bible says He became poor so that we might become rich. In other words, He came to swap our poverty and miseries with His own glory and riches.
A school of thought is not in agreement with the excessive focus on wealth, prosperity, and riches in the messages that emanate from Christian pulpits these days. And justifiably so because, while preaching about wealth is not bad in itself, neglecting the more important homily of sanctification, holiness, godliness, purity, spiritual maturity and so on to focus on self-aggrandizement is a deviation from the most important course to instead majoring on minor things.
Nevertheless, that some people have an issue with the message of prosperity does not nullify the fact that liberating people from the shackles of poverty and entrusting them with wealth is one of the purposes of Jesus Christ. He came to take on human abjectness and offer abundance in return (John 10:10). There are innumerable people who would not have amounted to much if not for their encounter with Jesus Christ.
But then, it would be myopic to limit the riches that Christ offers to financial gains alone. There is more to being rich than having surplus money. Long and fulfilled life, good health, quality relationships, kinetic abilities, and emotional wholeness, among others, are equally important in the abundance equation, as money cannot buy those, nor is it a substitute for any of them.
Therefore, since poverty is not limited to finance alone, the enrichment ministry of Jesus is also not restricted to a fat bank account; He enriches all aspects of life as long as they are surrendered to Him. So, how do you want His enrichment? Is it for your finances alone or for your entire being?
You will succeed in Jesus’s Name!
