Dealing with Scaremongers

My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid. – Nehemiah 6:14

As a fallout of dealing with fake prophets, another lesson we can learn from Nehemiah is how to deal with scaremongers. Scaremongers spread tales and false information with the intention to alarm the hearers so they can act out of place and suffer the consequence.

We have read how sensitive the era that Nehemiah lived in with most of the known world then under the imperial rule of the Persian empire and any form of rebellion would be violently quashed. Nehemiah was not unaware of this and must have realized how important it was for his regime as the governor of Judah and the project he was overseeing not to be misconstrued at Shushan. That was why he was decisive in the way he handled his various adversaries and the many darts they threw his way. Where they wanted fear, he replied with courage; where they provoked altercation, he responded with reticence; where they sought for agitation, he replied with calmness; and where they peddled false allegations with the mind of implicating him, he replied with his own refutations to set the record straight.

It takes wisdom and maturity to navigate the tricky terrains that Nehemiah had to pass through and to manage the various issues he had to contend with in his reign. Gladly, he was able to scale through them with success, and his methods thus form a blueprint for us to emulate today.
