How to Be A Leader Worth Dying For (Final)

And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” – 1 Kings 12:7

In conclusion of our weeklong meditation on what it takes to be a servant leader or a leader whose followers would do anything for, we will do a recap of the main points such a leader must possess.

Firstly, a leader who desires to attain the heights of servant leader, which is the ultimate level of leadership, must reorientate himself about what leadership really is and must be a servant to the people he is leading rather than their master. A true leader is actually a public servant, and if you imagine what a servant does or ought to do, then it is easy to picture one who is a true leader doing same to her people, who in the context of leadership are the real masters.

Secondly, a true leader must be committed to genuine service. She must always have the interests of her people at heart and diligently serve them. A servant leader is never self-serving, neither does she regard her charges as vassals who are there to serve her. It is usually the other way round. He occupies the position of power in order to provide service. Therefore, his daily duties must be to serve and improve the welfare of his people.

Thirdly, a leader who desires to attain the heights of servant leadership must be committed to constant engagement and communication with her charges. She cannot ignore them or dismiss whatever concern they have as nonissue. A leader cannot lead from a glass house. A leader who knows her onions will also not delegate facial engagement with her people to her lieutenants. It must be personal. She must make time to constantly interact with them, sample their opinions and feel their pulse about policies and programs his administration is undertaking to improve outcomes for them.

Lastly, a genuine leader speaks encouraging words to his followers and the content of his communication with them are mostly positive and optimistic, not negative and threatening. Part of speaking positive words to the followers involves speaking the truth to them and not lying. A true leader must not shirk from the truth or deliberately deceive her charges into believing a lie so as to look good in their eyes. The second part is that a true leader must keep her promises to the people and diligently serve them in such a way that she will not need to lie in order to look good.

If you diligently follow this blueprint, you will emerge a phenomenon leader whose breed is very rare in the world we live in.
