Benefits of Wisdom: Maturity
He who is devoid of wisdom despises his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his peace. – Proverbs 11:12
Another benefit that wisdom bestows is maturity. Wisdom confers those who possess it with the mental and emotional strength needed to put things in perspective and to accurately evaluate people, issues, and circumstances.
According to our reference passage, a lack of wisdom makes someone despises his/her neighbour, whilst the presence of it makes one peaceable. In other words, it is the absence of wisdom that makes one racist, exclusive, disagreeable, or prone to quarrel. And why that? Because he/she does not have enough mental and emotional resources to see beyond the microscope of their own world or experience or to accurately appreciate a matter at hand or the other person, as the case may be, before relapsing into the offensive – blaming, criticising and fighting them. Such resources are spinoffs of wisdom.
One of the indications of wisdom is an agreeable bearing and an ability to get along with most people. Even when the other person is not congenial, the Bible says a wise person will hold his peace and not return fire for fire. Wisdom makes one mature in disposition as well as friendly and pleasant. While those may seem like commonplace attributes, they are not. It takes more energy to go out of one’s way to be pleasant. In fact, being positive requires more mental and emotional discipline than just flowing with the negatives.
It does not take much ingenuity to attack, blame or find faults. That is why the Bible says it easier for “People without good sense [to] find fault with their neighbors, but those with understanding keep quiet” (NCV).
You will succeed in Jesus’ Name!
