Benefits of Wisdom: Instruction

The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility. – Proverbs 15:33

Another benefit that accrues from wisdom is spelt out in the passage above – it instructs you on how to fear God.

Wisdom has been described as the fear of the LORD (read Job 28:28, Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10). And in the passage above, we are further enlightened as to the relationship between wisdom and the fear of God. Whilst wisdom is synonymous with or starts from fearing God, it also teaches how to conduct yourself in terms of relating with Him.

At the heart of most personal sins or social injustice, and the calamities arising therefrom, is a disregard for God or an inappropriate sense of reverence for Him. And we know that sins and social injustice have various degrees of consequences. In the same way, living right in acknowledgment of the omniscience of God and fear of Him have numerous advantages. Wisdom is, therefore, an effective instructor in achieving this, as it teaches us what to do and how we ought to conduct ourselves in different situations to make the most of life and be a positive influence.

Therefore, wisdom is required for you to live right, think right, do right and be right in the eyes of God. Not the wisdom that comes from the principles of the world or motivational teachings, but the wisdom that evolves from first knowing God – His will, His preferences, His counsel, His commands – and conforming yourself to the demands of this knowledge such that if there is a conflict between the exigencies of life and what you know of God, His dictates will determine the course of action you take, not your pressures. That is the fear of God; that is wisdom.
