The Myth of Omnipresence (9): God En Route to Sodom and Gomorrah

And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” – Genesis 18:1-2, 20-21

Another scriptural evidence that invalidates the notion of God’s omnipresence can be seen in this passage, which is a continuation of the excerpt we examined yesterday. Here, God told Abraham that He was “going down” to Sodom and Gomorrah to ascertain the veracity of the various atrocities that had been reported to Him about the people of the place.

Analyzing this further, firstly by announcing His mission to Sodom and Gomorrah, God was confirming the fact that He was not materially present in that part of the world. Omnipresence connotes that God is everywhere at the same time. But by announcing with His own mouth that He was going to Sodom and Gomorrah, He was affirming that He was not in that land in the first place and was only going there on a fact-finding mission to verify for Himself the reports He had heard about the place and its people.

Secondly, by saying that His mission was due to the outcries that had come to Him against Sodom and Gomorrah, God was also affirming that He was not present there at all; hence, the outcries that came to Him, which He was then responding to. Therefore, this further quashes the theory of an omnipresent God.

Again, it must be emphasized that proving that God is not omnipresent is not an attempt on the part of this writer to undermine the eminence and greatness of God. That is far from the case. God remains the Ultimate. He is supreme. He is the Almighty, the Omnipotent. He is the Sovereign Potentate.

However, saying that He is everywhere is stretching the truth of His nature. He is not everywhere. He is not omnipresent, even though He can be wherever He wants to be without restriction and can be in gazillions of places at the same time. However, that does not mean He is everywhere all the time. That is not true. There are more accurate attributes we can ascribe to Him; omnipresence is not one of them.
