The Myth of Omnipresence (1): The 5 Places God Always Is
“For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” – Malachi 3:6
Before reading this piece, it is highly recommended that you read the prequel titled “Understanding God: He is NOT Omnipresent” on our sister site, as that will give you a background to this new series that we shall be devoting to clearing the myth about the omnipresence of God.
After you have finished reading that, you can proceed to read this particular meditation and the subsequent ones that will be published under the Myth of Omnipresence series.
To start off, it is important to state that trying to prove that God is not omnipresent as popularly believed is not an attempt to demean, diminish or detract from the eminence of God. The writer of this series strongly believes in the supremacy of God and His Sovereignty. God is the ultimate, all are from Him, through Him, for Him and to Him. As vast as the universe is, He is the center of the universe, and He is not just the Maker of all things. He also rules over all things. Therefore, there is no doubt about His Eminence.
However, claiming that God is omnipresent is not an accurate attribution. He is many other things, but omnipresent is not one of them. There are actually five places God is ever present, and those are what we shall consider shortly:
- On His throne
The first place you are most certain to see God is on His throne. He is not just God, He is a King, the King of kings. And, unlike earthly kings who have to retire for the day, God does not need to retire or sleep for the day, because He is God. He is always on His throne, sitting in glory and majesty.
Micaiah, a lesser-known prophet, was the first person to give us a glimpse into God’s position in heaven when he was summoned by Kings Ahab and Jehoshaphat ahead of a war expedition that proved to be the Waterloo of Ahab.
Then Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by, on His right hand and on His left. – 1 Kings 22:19
Prophet Isaiah was the second person to give us a preview of God’s position in heaven when he wrote:
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” – Isaiah 6:1-3
Daniel was also privileged to behold God in His splendor, with a touch of awe to his own account of heavenly glory:
I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire; A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened. – Daniel 7:9-10
The heavenly account of John the Beloved, who wrote the Book of Revelation, was the third one and was even more striking than that of Micaiah and Isaiah. See it below:
After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”
Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white [b]robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”
Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
“You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.” – Revelation 4:1-11
Thus, the first place God is always present, and ever is, is on His throne.
