Universal Renown

Obey them completely, and you will display your wisdom and intelligence among the surrounding nations. When they hear all these decrees, they will exclaim, ‘How wise and prudent are the people of this great nation!’ – Deuteronomy 4:6 (New Living Translation)

Another benefit that wisdom confers on those who possess and apply it is universal renown. Those who are really wise and have a biblical understanding of human phenomenon or the intricacies of life cannot remain in obscurity as long as they share their insights.

In our reference passage today, Moses was charging the people of Israel about the need for them to be diligent in obeying the commands of God. Obeying not just in parts but completely, without leaving any out. He further stressed that doing so would establish them as wise and intelligent people in the eyes of others.

This provides a specific context to the source of wisdom that elevates one for universal recognition. It is not just any kind of wisdom, but the kind that originates from knowing the precepts of God and applying them. That is the type of wisdom that makes for renown.

The good news is that the word of God is easily accessible to us today. It can be found in the Bible. It is even interesting to note that because of civilization and the ubiquity of technology, we of this modern era have even better access to the word of God than the people in the biblical days. The Bible is a common piece of furniture around us. It is almost everywhere. It is the bestselling book of all time. It is even accessible in several languages and in different formats as to make it easier for everyone to be able to read, listen to, or consume it in whatever customized formats they prefer (Romans 10:8-21).
