The Benefits of Wisdom: Happiness
Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding. – Proverbs 3:13
The benefit of wisdom we shall consider today is happiness. Wisdom makes one happy, as attested by our reference Bible passage today.
It is often said that happiness is the ultimate pursuit of all humans. Everyone wants to be happy. Even those who seem to be naturally masochistic are trying to pursue happiness, albeit in the wrong way. Everyone, without exception, loves being happy, even if they do not want to admit it.
While there are many ways one can pursue happiness, be that through service, sacrifice, benevolence, helping, leading, and some negative ways such as coercion, manipulation, masochism, oppression, among others, the Bible tells us that a wise person is also happy. That means wisdom is also a pathway to happiness.
From all we have learnt of wisdom so far, it is safe to say that the brand of happiness that wisdom confers is most likely to be an edifying and lasting one, not the kind that requires predating on the suffering of others or exacting pain on oneself to achieve.
Therefore, even if wisdom is not our main priority and may be secondary to humanity’s fundamental quest for happiness, the fact that we can access good happiness through wisdom should make it a worthy addition to our list of pursuits, for wisdom makes happy.
