Sensitiveness
Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt. Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. – Nehemiah 7:4-5
In continuation of our meditation on the leadership lessons to be learned from Nehemiah, another attribute of his that stands out in our reference passage above is spiritual sensitiveness. In his own words, he said, “Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy.”
It is important for a leader to be devoted and have a good relationship with God as this will avail her a supernatural ally. Among other things, God is the ultimate. He is also omniscient and knows what to do per time. therefore, being aligned with Him is the best choice anyone can make, more importantly a leader who has the destinies and welfares of people entrusted to him. Therefore, having a relationship with God ensures that the burden of leadership, which can be lonesome and dreary, does not prove burdensome for the leader.
Also, seeing that direction is part of the critical obligations of a leader, a relationship with God would place her on the proverbial shoulders of giant and help her so see farther than others. Foresight, which is the effect of this lofty placement, is a much desirable asset in leadership. This was what Nehemiah enjoyed as seen in the passage we read earlier. Because he had an ongoing with God, God counseled him as to what to do by placing an idea to conduct a census in his heart.
This is remarkable because the problem the passage started with was the problem of underpopulation, “the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt” (Nehemiah 7:4). The natural solution to this kind of problem would be to populate the land through whatever method was popular during that time. However, before Nehemiah could get into a problem-solving mode, God impressed upon his heart what he needed to do – conduct a census. How this course of action played out afterward may be for us to consider in future instalments of this series, but suffice to say that Nehemiah was able to hear from God because he had a relationship with God which made him sensitive to God’s voice.
If you aspire to leadership or you are already holding a leadership position but do not have an ongoing relationship with God, you need to do so right away by confessing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and accepting the Holy Spirit into your heart.
You Will Succeed in Jesus Name!
