Security

And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.” – Nehemiah 7:3

Another lesson we can learn from the leadership example of Nehemiah was security consciousness and the need to have a watertight security system in place to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Having completed the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem and appointing officials to take charge of different administrative setup to keep the city running, Nehemiah saw the importance of also having a security apparatus in place to safeguard the lives of the people of the city and preserve the herculean project he had just completed. He therefore charged the leadership team he had constituted to see to that with specific instructions on the outlook of the security system. This way, he also confirmed the established principle that security is part of the core responsibilities of leadership.

As obvious as this move on the part of Nehemiah might seem, you will be surprised to know the number of leaders that get the issue of security all wrong as they focus more on their own safety and would appropriate a sizable budget whilst also mobilizing state resources to keep themselves and their families safe, whereas the people they are either elected to serve or sworn to protect are left at the mercies of marauders.

While it is not a bad thing for leaders to have security to protect themselves from bad actors, those who are more concerned about their own preservation and are not able to secure their citizens or the people they preside over are mere title holders, not leaders. A leader by virtue of the obligations that come with the calling must be the number one security officer of her domain. That means he must ensure that every individual in that territory is safe and not vulnerable to aggressions from within and outside. Anyone who is not able to protect his people and has no solution to his citizens being mauled and killed by enemies is not worthy of being called a leader.

If you aspire to leadership, you need to know this and do well to adhere to it.

You Will Succeed in Jesus Name!
